Love or hate burpees, the movement is not inherently a bad movement. When broken down, a burpee is in fact a basic movement that I believe we all need to be capable of performing even if it's modified.
If your back starts to hurt during or after burpees, then check out this video by Dr. Kelly Starrett with The Ready State. He is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, a New York Times Bestselling Author, and has been popularized for his mobility work among other things.
The main takeaway is that even if you hate burpees, when done correctly they can be a great exercise for many reasons. The video covers how burpees can help you learn proper sequencing of your spine in and out of global flexion and extension. And the importance of a butt squeeze to protect the lower back.
If you're interested in learning more about mobility work, self-soft tissue mobilization, CrossFit training, and many other topics then I encourage you to spend some time looking at some of his other resources. You can find tons of videos on YouTube, listen to his podcasts, or even get his books. He has a few books, but I really liked Built to Move.
Hope you can soak in some knowledge and put it to good use!
Sincerely,
Dr. Sieara Hinshaw
